Connecting Communities through History

In August 2008, an Institute for Museum and Library Services Museums for America grant enabled Historic Columbia to take an unprecedented step toward co-creating the history of six downtown neighborhoods - Arsenal HillCottontownHeathwoodHollywood-Rose HillLower Waverly and Old Shandon - with their current and former residents. Oral histories combined with historic images to heighten community pride and enrich the general history of Columbia. Connecting Communities through History’s walking and driving tour brochures, wayside signage and interactive online tours have promoted public education and local heritage tourism, as well as prompting similar work within other downtown neighborhoods. Through this project, residents of Columbia and Richland County have grown to become more effective stewards of their historical and cultural heritage.
