Historic Columbia receives 2004 AASLH Award
The American Association for State and Local History (AALSH) awards Historic Columbia for its exhibit, Home to Many People: The Story of the Hampton-Preston Estate.

(Columbia, SC) - Historic Columbia is the recipient of a 2004 AALSH Certificate of Commendation for its exhibit, Home to Many People: The Story of the Hampton-Preston Mansion Estate. The AALSH Awards Program, now in its 59th year, is the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of local, state and regional history. Awards for 2004 represent 102 organizations and individuals from across the United States.

The exhibit, located in the Hampton-Preston Mansion on Blanding Street, is the first holistic account of this important historic property and the people who lived and worked there from 1818 to 1968. Recognized by the AALSH for its excellence in content development, graphic design and installation, the exhibit chronicles both the property's 150-year diverse history and the lives of the many people who have called the Hampton-Preston Mansion and Columbia home.

"Not only does this award recognize Historic Columbia's dedication towards telling the complete, diverse history of the properties that we manage," Acting Director Robin Waites said, "but also helps establish a foothold for us nationally as a destination for those interested in South Carolina history."

To see this award-winning exhibit, tickets for the Hampton-Preston Mansion can be purchased at the Historic Columbia Museum Shop, 1616 Blanding Street. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for those under 17. More information can be found at www.historiccolumbia.org or by calling 803.252.1770 ext. 24.

Funding for the exhibit was made possible in part by the Gilder Foundation and Richland County. Historic Columbia also acknowledges its collaborative partnership with University of South Carolina's McKissick Museums Management Program in the development of the exhibit's content.

The AALSH awards program was initiated in 1945 to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation and interpretation of state and local history throughout the United States.

Historic Columbia was founded in 1961 by a group of preservationists determined to save the Ainsley Hall House, known today as the Robert Mills House. More than four decades later Historic Columbia now manages four historic house museums and their associated artifacts. Through programs of advocacy, education and preservation, Historic Columbia protects, supports and nurtures the historical and cultural heritage of Columbia, South Carolina.
