Historic Columbia Board of Trustees Announces New Executive Director

(Columbia, SC) - Historic Columbia's Board of Trustees announced yesterday that Robin Waites has been appointed to the position of Executive Director. Waites had been serving as Acting Director of the preservation organization since January 1, 2004.

"The Board of Trustees has been impressed with Robin's strong leadership, exceptional skills and her great love of this community," said Board of Trustees President Belinda Gergel. "With Robin at the helm, Historic Columbia will be moving in dynamic new directions, utilizing historic preservation as a tool for economic development."

Waites began work at Historic Columbia as the Director of External Affairs in January 2002. Prior to joining Historic Columbia she served in various capacities at the South Carolina State Museum from 1997 through 2001, concluding as the Chief Curator of Art.

Waites is a Columbia native, attended Richland District One Schools and received a bachelor's degree in Russian and Art History from Middlebury College in Vermont. In 1996 Waites received the degree Master of Arts in Art History from the University of South Carolina.

Historic Columbia was founded in 1961 by a group of preservationists determined to save the Ainsley Hall House, known today as the Robert Mills House. More than four decades later Historic Columbia now manages four historic house museums and their associated artifacts. Through programs of advocacy, education and preservation, Historic Columbia protects, supports and nurtures the historical and cultural heritage of Columbia, South Carolina.
