Eligible Landmark Properties

Spurred by the loss of the former Richland County Jail that stood at the corner of Hampton and Lincoln Streets, a volunteer committee of local architects, developers, city planners and historians established Historic Columbia's Eligible Local Landmark List in 2005.

Through this list, Historic Columbia seeks to take a more proactive approach toward preservation advocacy by identifying downtown commercial sites that meet the City of Columbia's criteria for landmark designation but lack the zoning overlay that triggers a review of significant changes or demolition. The original list included 30 buildings, 10 of which have subsequently received designation. Updated, the list includes more than 40 structures:
