The Grounds of the Hampton Preston Mansion & Gardens
Have
your wedding reception, party or celebration under the stars on
the grounds of the antebellum Hampton-Preston Mansion. This Columbia
landmark epitomizes the lifestyle of the planter elite in antebellum
South Carolina and was home to some of Columbia’s most notable
families. The mansion was built in 1818 by Ainsley Hall, a wealthy
Columbia merchant.
After Wade Hampton I bought the property in 1823, he altered the
house considerably. The exterior of the house received a stucco
finish, scored to appear like cut stone. Mary Cantey Hampton, his
third wife, designed elaborate gardens to surround the mansion.
The Hampton-Preston Mansion survived the burning of Columbia by
serving as a Union Army Headquarters in 1865. Subsequently, it served
a short stint as the governor's mansion before becoming College
for Women and later Chicora College. In 1930, the house gradually
fell into disrepair but was restored in 1970
Set against the backdrop of one of Columbia’s historic gems,
the Hampton-Preston Gardens provide four acres of beautiful green
space—the perfect setting for your next special event.
