Join Dr. Kelly Goldberg for this month’s Knowledge at Noon: Digging Where You Play. Did you know Sesquicentennial State Park, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and opened to the public in 1940, contains archaeological sites representing both precontact and historic occupations? Recent archaeological excavations focused on investigating the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century African American communities that were present prior to the park’s construction and not currently represented in park interpretive narratives. This presentation discusses the ways in which collaborations with local descendants and a focus on educational engagement among K–12 and postsecondary institutes have directed the research design of the Sesquicentennial archaeology project.

About Kelly Goldberg

Kelly Goldberg, Ph.D, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of South Carolina working within the context of the transatlantic African Diaspora. She is a historical archaeologist and Director of the university's Public Heritage Lab, which focuses on connecting K-12 schools with archaeological resources. She was the recipient of a Fulbright Award which supported her dissertation research on archaeological investigations of the transatlantic slave trade in 19th century Guinea. She has worked closely with the National Parks Service and SC State Parks looking at sites of historical erasure in the eastern US (Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina).
