Community Scanning Day: Cotton Mill District

The Market at 701 Whaley : 701 Whaley Street, Columbia, SC 29201

Join Richland Library and Historic Columbia for their inaugural community scanning day on November 12, 2026, at 701 Whaley.

In an effort to further document the experiences of individuals and families who lived, worked, and spent time in the neighborhoods near “Whaley’s Mills”—Olympia, Granby, and surrounds—we invite the community to bring photographs, ephemera, or small 3-D objects to contribute to the online collection Midlands Memories. Staff from both organizations will be on hand to discuss your items and perform digital scans. Following the event, Richland Library staff will provide additional research and upload scans to their website for public access. Contributors may request digital copies of their items.

  • About Midlands Memories

Midlands Memories is a digital collection contributed by members of the community that depicts people, places and events of local historical significance. You can help us grow the collection by bringing:

    • Photographs and ephemera at least 50 years old.
    • What is ephemera? Paper objects such as postcards, ticket stubs, posters, flyers, and programs. We are also looking for issues of the mill newsletter, The Spinner.
    • Please no studio portraits by companies such as Sears or JC Penney.
    • If you would like staff to examine other items (letters, yearbooks) to determine historical significance or identify an organization who can safely care for them, please bring them as well.
  • Bring Us to Your Community

Interested in bringing this free service to your neighborhood? Contact us at: Margaret Dunlap, mdunlap@richlandlibrary.com or Kat Allen, kallen@historiccolumbia.org.
