The Mickens

Formerly known as Rev. Matthew Mickens & The Highway Travelers of South Carolina, The Mickens are more than a Gospel quartet—they are a living ministry, a family legacy, and a generational movement built on faith, harmony, and the power of Gospel music.

Founded over 50 years ago by Deacon James Mickens and Pastor Hattie Mickens, the journey began with a simple yet divine vision: use music to serve God and bring family together. What started as “The Mickens Children”—all thirteen siblings singing together—soon became known as The Highway Travelers, a name symbolizing their mission to carry the Gospel wherever God leads.

As the family grew, so did the ministry. With children having children, Deacon Mickens proudly expanded the legacy into two powerful branches:

• The Highway Travelers (the original group)
• The Junior Travelers (the next generation)

This multi-generational model wasn’t just unique—it was prophetic. Entire family bloodlines united in worship, singing “good Gospel music” the way it was meant to be sung: with conviction, harmony, and heart.

Today, that legacy lives on as The Mickens—a modern Gospel quartet rooted in tradition but boldly stepping into the future. They represent three generations of faith, seamlessly blending classic quartet sound with contemporary Gospel energy that resonates across churches, concerts, festivals, and family audiences nationwide.
