Former Neighborhood Stores
Generations of Waverly residents fondly recall the numerous “mom and pop” convenience stores that once dotted their community. Within these blocks were Compton’s, Hill’s, Dent’s and Ruff’s. Meanwhile, Hughes Grocery Store at 2211 Lady Street and the rival stores of Singleton T. Thomas and Chris Athans within Heidt Street’s 1300 block also offered easy access to food as well as diversion and local gossip.
