1015 Laurens Street
On the night of January 10, 1912, a fire destroyed the five-room home of J. W. R. Pope. After thanking neighbors and firefighters for their assistance in quelling the flames, Pope rebuilt what remained of the house and enlarged the building. Over the years, small families and couples rented this American Foursquare home, which eventually became a duplex advertised to college students in the 1940s. A traditional American Foursquare house is a two-story building with a low-pitched roof and a central dormer and features either Colonial Revival or Craftsman style details.
