For Scout Troops

Scout Troops can earn Historic Columbia's Time Travelers Patch through several specialty tours and programs throughout the year. These events allow troop participants to understand Columbia's history through hands-on learning experiences.

These programs are available by reservation only for Scout Troops or individual scouts. Look for them on our events page or contact the education department by email or call 803.252.1770 x 26.

Archaeology at Mann-Simons Site  |  Winter

Learn how archaeologists determine what people ate, tools they used, objects they owned, and even where previous buildings were built. Scouts will explore the footprints of buildings that once stood on the site and interact with the artifacts discovered in archaeological digs. Scouts will participate in several hands-on activities including pottery refit and archaeology dig boxes.

Victorian Tea Party  |  Spring

Scouts will have the opportunity to learn about Victorian customs like calling cards and the language of the fan. Scouts will also make Victorian-inspired crafts like herb sachets and paper dolls. The highlight of the day will be a Victorian tea where scouts will learn table manners and etiquette.

Cemetery Hunt  |  Fall

This program will explore the history of Columbia either through Elmwood Cemetery or through historic downtown church cemeteries. Scouts will receive a tour of the cemetery to learn about famous individuals buried at these sites, interesting stories of events associated with the cemeteries, and the iconography of symbols on gravestones. Scouts will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities, such as grave rubbings.

Historic Holidays  |  Holiday Season

Tour holiday decorated historic houses and learn how families in Columbia celebrated the holidays throughout the 19th century. A Victorian Santa Claus will visit with children and listen to those holiday gift requests! Scouts can also make a holiday craft and enjoy hot chocolate and cookies.
