“I can only describe my experience as a volunteer for Historic Columbia as fabulous. Not only am I discovering more and more about the rich heritage of Columbia and the state at large but I am meeting interesting people from around the nation and several foreign countries. In short, I’m hooked on Historic Columbia.”
– Robert Triplett, retired professor of music, University of Iowa

A major part of Historic Columbia's success can be credited to the strength and support of our volunteers. Whether it is a leading historic house museum tours or lending a hand at our special events, Historic Columbia's volunteers stand head and shoulders above the rest. Volunteering at Historic Columbia offers you a chance to meet new people, visit historic sites and learn more about the culture and lifestyles of the 19th century. Through guided tours, educational programs and social events, volunteering with Historic Columbia is truly a rewarding experience.

During the course of the year, Historic Columbia provides a two-day training session for those interested in becoming docents and leading guided tours of our four historic house museums. During these two days, volunteers are given an introduction to the four house museums and to basic tour techniques. The next step is to shadow current tour guides until you have confidence to lead a tour independently.

Benefits of joining the Docent Guild include special discount in the Museum Shop, complimentary entrance to the house museums for your immediate family, free or reduced entry to Historic Columbia special events, a quarterly Historic Columbia newsletter and a monthly volunteer newsletter.
