A Talk and Tasting

Sold Out!

Boyd Horticultural Center : 1615 Blanding Street, Columbia, SC 29201

Join authors Chef Kevin Mitchell and Professor David Shields for a lively discussion of their award-winning book, Taste the State: South Carolina’s Signature Foods, Recipes, and Their Stories.

The book presents the cultural histories of local ingredients and showcases specialty dishes found throughout the various regions of the state. Kevin Mitchell is the first African American chef instructor at the Culinary Institute of Charleston, and David Shields is the Carolina Distinguished Professor of the English Language and Literature Department at the University of South Carolina. A light tasting, inspired by the recipes in the book, will be provided by Spotted Salamander. The menu includes: shrimp paste and orange marmalade toasts; Kevin's black-eye peas and Adluh cornbread; smothered cabbage; and Manchester Farm quail with Anson rice grits and Carolina Heritage Farm pig foot gravy. A book signing and guided tours of the Hampton-Preston Gardens, including the new Boyd Foundation Horticultural Center greenhouse, will follow the presentation

The event takes place at the Boyd Foundation Horticultural Center on the grounds of the Hampton-Preston Mansion at 1615 Blanding Street. Ample street parking surrounds the property.
