We offer a variety of education programs for student, youth groups and adults. Teachers and youth group coordinators are encouraged to contact our education department to discuss customizing their itinerary to best meet the needs of their students and goals for the trip. Check out our events calendar for upcoming adult workshops, lectures and programs!
History at Home
Enjoy your history at home! We are happy to offer a variety of interactive, online educational programs for students, youth groups, and colleges and universities. All online programs meet South Carolina state standards.
Field Trips
We offer a variety of field trip options, including tours of our historic houses, walking tours throughout Columbia and hop-on bus tours. Our field trips meet South Carolina education standards for various grade levels and youth group interests.
Traveling Trunks
We can come to your school and bring one of our five fun and educational traveling trunks. Trunks align with South Carolina state social studies standards for a variety of grade levels and topics.
Hands-On History
Students can enjoy hands-on history at home with our learning kits. Featuring a new theme each month, these kits include video lesson, a themed activity with supplies, and instructions. Learning kits are geared for K-5 students and align with South Carolina state standards.
Homeschool Program
On the first Friday of the month (September-May), we host an educational program for homeschool students. Topics include 19th-century games, cultural activities, and tours of historic cemeteries and sites.
Scout Troops
Scout Troops can take part in specialty tours and programs throughout the year. These events allow troop participants to understand Columbia's history through hands-on learning experiences. Historic Columbia's Time Travelers Patch is available for purchase in the Gift Shop at Robert Mills for troops who participate in our programs.
Adult Education
We provide many types of programs for life-long learners. Our programs teach practical skills, including research, historic preservation and gardening. Adult education programs are designed for both newcomers and those who have worked with these topics for years.
