A History of the Columbia YWCA

Description
In October 2023, Historic Columbia commenced work to fully document and share the history of the Columbia chapter of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), founded in 1914 and expanded in 1921 to include the segregated Phyllis Wheatley unit. Deliverables include a StoryMap collection featuring an organizational history, past transformative leaders, and key building information; two historical markers placed at the sites of the primary YWCA building (1505 Blanding Street) and the Phyllis Wheatley branch (1429 Park Street); and the transfer of additional archival materials to the Young Women's Christian Association (Columbia, S.C.) records held by South Caroliniana Library.
Please contact JoCora Moore if you have stories or materials related to any of the Columbia YWCA branches. Historic Columbia staff can provide scanning services or direct you to the appropriate archival repository should you choose to donate items.
