19th Amendment Series: the Columbia Chapter of the League of Women Voters

Free Entry

RSVP

Robert Mills Carriage House : 1616 Blanding St, Columbia, SC 29201

In alignment with the movement to ratify the 19th Amendment, which would give women the right to vote, a fledgling League of Women Voters Chapter was established in Columbia in 1920. Although it did not survive the initial start-up, a foundation was laid for its resurgence in 1947.

With issues ranging from addressing sub-par health standards, to adopting a city manager form of government, the Columbia Chapter of the League became a standard bearer for women-led organizations across the state. In the lead up to the commemoration the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment in August 2020, past presidents of the local league will discuss its founding, early stances, the Chapter’s integration in the early 1960s, and more.

To celebrate the centennial of the formation of the League of Women Voters of the U.S. (on February 14, 1920), we will have cake and coffee!

This event is free and open to the public, space is limited.
