Modjeska Monteith Simkins House : 2025 Marion Street, Columbia, SC 29201

Join Historic Columbia for a virtual two-day professional development workshop! Using live, interactive online sessions, teachers will examine Civil Rights and Intersectionality in South Carolina.

Participants will be able to explore resources available for their classroom through Historic Columbia (including the reinterpretation project at Modjeska Monteith Simkins’ House), the South Carolina Historical Society, the South Carolina Geographic Alliance, South Carolina Collaborative for Race and Reconciliation, and the South Carolina Council for History Education. Teachers will also have the opportunity to develop curriculum materials using local stories to connect the Civil Rights movement in South Carolina to the national movement. University of South Carolina's Dr. Valinda Littlefield will be joining us as the featured guest lecturer.

Registration is $20 for Historic Columbia Members and $25 for non-members. Registration for the virtual workshop includes access to live sessions through Google Meet, recordings of the workshop sessions, a shared Google Drive with virtual copies of the materials, as well as access to a Seesaw classroom for live collaboration. Registrants will also be mailed hard copies of the materials from the workshop, a certificate for continuing education credit, and a t-shirt. Please register before July 24th to if you want hard copies to arrive by August 3rd. Contact Kelly Kinard at 803.252.1770 x26 for more information.
