This summer, we are offering special education packages geared towards young learners! These programs explore our historic properties with interactive tours, crafts and games. Below are the summer youth programs offered this year.
Summer Group Packages
New – “Indigo-ing” Places
Learn about the history of Indigo as a plant and dye, and the role it played in the history of South Carolina’s Midlands. Children will follow Indigo’s journey around the world, plant their own seeds from Indigo grown at Historic Columbia, learn how Indigo dye was made, and dye their own bandana with real Indigo! This program is $6 per child and includes a bandana for each participant to dye.
Robert Mills House
Enter the world of the 19th century before tablets and television. How did kids entertain themselves? What were their daily lives like? Learn about what life was like before electricity through crafts, games, and an interactive tour of the Robert Mills House!
The Hampton-Preston gardens always have something in bloom! Investigate our flowers and plants through a sensory scavenger hunt of the grounds. Participants will learn how plants grow and take home their own garden in a glove!
Explore the world of archaeology at the Mann-Simons Site and learn how archeology can help us learn about the past! Children will view real artifacts found at the site, get a little dirty during a mini-archaeological excavation, and make their own sensory sedimentary jars!
