St. Martin de Porres Church and School

Dedicated in December 1935, St. Martin de Porres Church offered African American Catholics a place of worship during an era in which Assembly Street’s St. Peter’s Catholic Church barred black congregants. Since its founding in 1936 as a parish ministry, St. Martin de Porres Catholic School has educated both black and white Waverly residents, many of whom have risen to prominence within their various fields and disciplines.
